Loreto has been a fishing town far longer than it has been a tourist town, and the water around the islands is some of the most productive in the Sea of Cortez. On Loreto Star you fish with a local captain who is on this water every week, with rods, tackle and bait on board, and a boat small enough to work the rocky points and drop-offs that the big sport-fishers cannot reach.
What We Catch, and When
- Dorado (mahi-mahi) — June to October. Loreto's signature summer fish. Fast, acrobatic and excellent on the plate; we troll for them along the current lines and floating weed between the islands.
- Yellowtail — December to April. The winter target. Strong, hard-pulling fish on the high spots and rocky points around Isla Coronado and Isla del Carmen.
- Roosterfish — May to October. Along the beaches and points, often in shallow water. A bucket-list fish for many anglers, and we release them.
- Cabrilla, snapper and grouper — year-round. Bottom and rock fishing close to the islands. Great for families and for anyone who wants steady action rather than one big fish.
- Marlin and sailfish — July to October. Further offshore, which means a longer charter of 8 hours or more.
Fishing by the Hour
There is no fixed package here. Four hours gets you a solid morning around Coronado or the near points. Six hours is the sweet spot for a real fishing day with time to move if the bite shifts. Eight or more takes you offshore for billfish in summer, or lets you fish the morning and then swim and eat lunch on an island beach in the afternoon — which is how many of our guests do it.
Gear and Licenses
Rods, reels, tackle and bait are on board, and you are welcome to bring your own if you have a set-up you prefer. Anyone who fishes needs a Mexican sport fishing license, sold by the day online; we will tell you exactly how to get one when you book. We follow the park's rules on where fishing is allowed and we release roosterfish, billfish and anything undersized.
Your Catch
Take your dorado or yellowtail back to town and most restaurants along the malecón will cook it for you the way you like — ask your captain for his favourite.
