Every winter blue whales come into the deep, sheltered water between Loreto and the islands to feed, and for a few months this small town becomes one of the most reliable places on Earth to see them. There is no bus, no crowd and no fixed route on Loreto Star: it is you, your captain and a flat sea, following the blow of an animal the length of a bus and a half.
When to Come
Blue whales arrive in the Loreto area in mid-January and stay until late March, sometimes into early April. February and the first half of March are the most consistent weeks. Fin whales — the second-largest animal on the planet — are here over the same period, humpbacks pass through, and pods of common and bottlenose dolphins are around all year. Some winters bring orcas and pilot whales too.
How a Whale Trip Works
We leave the marina early, usually around sunrise, because the Sea of Cortez is glassy in the morning and a blow is easy to spot from a long way off. Your captain runs toward the channel between the islands where the whales feed, then cuts the engine and waits. A blue whale surfaces to breathe for a few minutes, then dives for ten to fifteen, so a good trip is a rhythm of watching, waiting and repositioning. Five hours is the right length for a dedicated whale morning, and it leaves time to fold in a beach stop at Coronado on the way back; add an hour or two if you want longer on the sand.
Responsible Watching
Whale watching inside Loreto Bay National Marine Park is regulated. We keep the distance the park rules require, approach from the side rather than from behind, never chase, and let the animal decide how close it wants to come — which, on a calm day, is often much closer than you expect. Our captain has watched these whales every winter for years and reads their pattern well enough to put you in the right place without pushing them.
What to Bring
Mornings in January and February are cool on the water: a windbreaker, a hat that stays on, sunglasses and sunscreen. Bring a camera with the longest lens you own, and binoculars if you have them. Motion sickness is rare in the sheltered channel but take a tablet before departure if you know you are prone to it.
