Five islands sit just off Loreto inside a national park that is also a UNESCO World Heritage site. We run to the three you can really spend a day on: Coronado, twenty minutes from the marina; Danzante, down the coast to the south; and Carmen, the big one across the bay. Every winter blue whales come to feed in the deep channel between Loreto and the islands. On a calm morning you can hear the blow before you see it. No crowd, no schedule — your boat, your captain, and a whale the length of a bus and a half.
The islands are why people come to Loreto. We beach the boat on the sand, set up a shade tent, chairs and a cooler, and the day is yours: snorkel with the sea lion colony, swim off the beach, walk the shoreline, eat lunch in the shade.
From mid-January to late March the channel off Loreto is one of the most reliable places on Earth to see blue whales — plus fin whales, humpbacks, dolphins and, some years, orcas. We leave at first light, when the sea is glass and a blow is visible from kilometres away.
Loreto was a fishing town long before it was a tourist town. Rods, tackle and bait are on board, and your captain fishes these islands every week — he knows where the bite is this week, not last season.
Anyone can put you on a boat. What makes the day is the person driving it — a local captain who grew up on this water, knows the islands, the fish and the whales, and runs the trip around your group instead of a timetable.

Sea lions, rays, turtles, boobies on the cliffs and sand you can see from the surface. The boat is just how you get there.
Nobody wants to cook in the Baja sun for six hours. Loreto Star has a full bimini top over the seating, and on every island stop we set up a shade tent, chairs and a cooler with ice on the beach.
A bimini top covers the seating area, so the crossing and the hours spent watching whales or fishing are out of the sun. The open bow is there if you want it.
The islands have no shade and no services. We bring the tent, the chairs and the cooler, set them up on the sand, and pack it all away when you're done.
Rods, reels, tackle and bait for trolling and bottom fishing. Bring your own if you prefer it.

Bottled water and a cooler full of ice. Bring your own lunch and drinks and we keep them cold.
